Bugs become features

Sung to the tune of “two become one”.

CS2 was announced today (Wed, March 22), after a painfully long hype cycle and so far all signs point to it being a fantastic upgrade.

Something in particular that caught my attention (it was pointed out quite specifically in this volumetric smoke vs HE grenade video) was the “he grenades disperse smoke from smoke grenades”.

What I think is really cool here is that you could argue this was already a feature of the game. You could argue it was also a bug, or at worst an exploit.

Smokes couldn't be dispersed, but with some trickery you could see through them (m0nesy example, old clip of flusha trying it in the same tunnel as in the CS2 video and it being explained by SPUNJ).

This “emergent feature” played out so interestingly that it made it’s way into the game for real in a much bigger, more obvious and clear way. And I think more successfully too.

It almost feels like a new example of how strafe jumping was essentially a bug in the old Quake movement code.

*Edit: a few days after writing this post my point specifically gets mentioned on the Talking Counter podcast
